If the pocket book can handle it, I would say to go with a wood shell. The wood will give you a more mellow tone over the punchier metal

Generally speaking, the bottom head (properly called the "resonant head") of a snare is tuned slightly looser than the top head.

If you get a drum dial, the batter head (top head) of a 5.5 x 14 snare would be tuned between 85-90, and the resonant head would be tuned between 80-85.

I'm with ya there DT. Right about where I have mine and it sounds great. Except I do notice that once I get to 93 on the batter head, qtr turns at the lugs dont show on the dial but make a difference in sound and rebound off the drum.
