Inexpensive Sound Buffer

Our kit is in our garage(don't worry, climate controlled most of the time because of humidity),and I need to figure out an inexpensive way to cover the garage door(slits/cracks) without investing serious coin on professional sound proofing material. Is there anything flexible that could be rolled up and could be rolled down? I refuse to take the advice from a carpenter,I need advice from someone who really knows.Any suggestion?

Re: Inexpensive Sound Buffer

If you want something that can be rolled up it is not going to work nearly as well as a permanent soundproofing material. The only thing that comes to mind is to weatherstrip the door really well. Weatherstripping is important but if you want to do a better job insulate the door also with as much material as possible. The more mass the more sound gets stopped. But if there is a crack in the door the insulation won't do much because the sound will be able to escape, that's why you need to weatherstrip. (and make sure there are no cracks in the door)

I have a buddy that has his entire studio bordered in old matresses. The acoustics are out of this world and so are his recordings. You would be suprised how well that knocks the sound down.

Re: Inexpensive Sound Buffer

ya one of my friends has his music shed walls covered in mattresses.

we have a saying that goes, "its not a party until your socks are on the ceiling."
the ceiling is made of really rough wood. if you throw a sock at it, it will stick.
i dunno why i felt like sharing that, but once we covered the whole ceiling with socks

Depending on what you consider cheap, you can get some 1x2 boards and make frames and attach insulation board and then cover it with a cheap cloth. put some small casters on the bottom and they can then be rolled out of the way when you are not playing. It is a little time consuming to build them but not to bad.
