Hey ChrisH,
I am so glad to get a response form someone who has taken the time to really tackle this drum dampening issue head on. As I have previously stated, there are those who truely believe that a set can be tuned to produce that unique quality concert type sound with no dampening whatsoever. The
TAMA site forum is full of them, but they are rue to give up any real useful information. I play a
TAMA Starclassic Performer B/B set that I bought new in September '09. I use
Aquarian Super 2's for the batter side, and Classic Clears for the reso on mounted and floor toms. My snare has the
Aquarian Classic Clear reso, with a Hi-Velocity coated on the batter. Kick drum has an
Aquarian Super Kick II. I use
REMO muting rings on the toms, with the
TAMA muting ring that came with the Starclassic Performer B/B snare from the factory. The sound the set produces with this set-up is awesome....but..I sure would like to know what I need to do to eliminate the muting rings altogether (including gel, tape, whatever) and tune them to produce the same killer sound. So how is this acheived?
