Nothing wrong with pillows inside the bass drum, although don't fill it up; you need plenty of room for the air to move in there. There are some bass drum heads that have muffling built in.
In the realm of tom heads, different guys like different things, but
Evans 2-plys on top with a single ply reso head are pretty popular. Personal preferences aboud for snares, too. Why not look at some of the older threads on this topic?
