Need Head Suggestions

Greetings,
I am back to playing the drums after taking a break for several years. I could use your suggestions on getting some fresh heads. They haven't been changed or tuned in many, many years.

I am playing a 5-piece set of Yamaha Custom Recording drums. I'm looking for heads that will be versatile and cover multiple genres. I'm definitely not a hard rocker. I play a mix of pop/funk/jazz/rock. I probably lean towards a warmer sound, but I'm open to suggestions.

I've checked out Roland and Evans websites. Lots of great choices.. made me a bit dizzy. Tried-and-true versatile options?

Also, I currently have pillows inside my BD. Current strategies for muffling the BD?

Thanks very much in advance.

Re: Need Head Suggestions

Nothing wrong with pillows inside the bass drum, although don't fill it up; you need plenty of room for the air to move in there. There are some bass drum heads that have muffling built in.

In the realm of tom heads, different guys like different things, but Evans 2-plys on top with a single ply reso head are pretty popular. Personal preferences aboud for snares, too. Why not look at some of the older threads on this topic?

Scroll to the top of this page and find the white triangle in the upper right hand corner ot the page that says "Search Drumset Connect." In that rectangle, type in "snare heads" or "tom heads" or "bass drum heads," and so on. The next page you see will list older threads on that specific topic on the bottom half of the page. Check out those threads. There's plenty of good stuff to read there. Good hunting.

For heads, I'm a big Remo fan; it's really whatever floats your boat though.
Evans are fine too(:
For the Remo heads I would suggest either Ambassador X or Pinstripe!

Having a pillow inside the bass drum is fine for muffling, but if you are looking for a classier way to muffle it, try this Remo muffling set that you can hook in the bottom of your bass drum.

Awesome call, venom. Simon Phillips uses that bass drum muffler. (who is she, anyway?)
