Re: Superphonic help

Hmmm.. probably an Ambassador X. It's pretty durable and will give the b/b a well rounded tone to it with plenty of attack and warmth.

Re: Superphonic help

I was just assuming SCP stood for Starclassic Performer, my mistake. An Ambassador X should still work pretty nicely for a birch drum

Re: Superphonic help

No I haven't, and I probably never will. They are to low and dead sounding for my liking, luckily they are incredibly durable. The thing with GC though is that the sales people are told to push certain products that the manufacturers want to sell. Sadly, the Emp X is one of those things
They try to sell me one everytime I go looking for a snare head. I do know that if you crank the living crap out of it it sounds pretty decent though.
But I'm just a CS guy lol

Thanks there so many choices Remo,Evans etc. You talk to some people they love Remo others hate them same thing said about Evans. I used Remo for 30yrs but they didn't have all these new fancy heads when I started. I do find Remo a little harder to tune then an Evans head. Both companies make some great heads it drives me nuts. When I started all there was from Remo was Ambassador,Emporer and Pinstripes.I never tried Evans back then because a guy at SA told me they were geared more for jazz players. What did I know I was young.I'll find my sound. Thanks again

Re: Superphonic help

OK now let's stop the dilemma. Here is Remo"s website. Contact them and let them tell you what models of heads are still available from them. They can also tell you where the local shops may have in stock. And while you're at it, please ask them if the "Weather Kings or Masters" are still available. I am a Gretsch and Ludwig type of guy. If their not, Let them tell what heads are compatible to the originals.

I have a set of Grecth now, and I use the Pinstripes. My old kit that was in really bad shape a few decade ago. They were Birch wood.

Re: Superphonic help

Yeah, Supraphonics had internal mufflers built into them up to about 1982 or so. I have a 1973 Supra with a muffler.

However, if you want the Bonham sound, I believe he used a regular ol' white coated Remo Emperor. Back in the day, if you didn't use the new fangled black dots, Diplomats, Ambassadors, or Emperors were your only choice. Clear versions of these heads came out about the same time Ludwig Vistalites hit the market.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but I will since this is considered old-skool now, but I'll use either a white coated Ambassador or Emperor on my snare (or the equivalent in Evans, the G1 or G2), and cut out a ring from an old head, about 3/4" to an inch wide. This ring will rest on the outer perimeter on the new drumhead and muffle it just enough to cut out the ring. The cool thing about it is that it bounces up off the head when you hit it hard enough, and rest back down. So you get the drum wide open, and then it muffles itself when the ring comes down.

Yeah, I remember the original Richie Rings. I still use them today.
