Re: Superphonic help

The Supra didn't come with a built in felt dampener like it's Acrolite counterpart. That being the case I personally would use a head that will dampen out some of the ring that the Supra can give by using a dampened batter. Something with a power dot, or dampening ring built in. If you don't want to use a dampening head you can always add a screw on dampener instead.

You might consider the Evans EC Reverse dot, EC1 reverse dot or even the Genere HD and HD Dry. I use the HD Dry myself to control metal drum overtone and they sound like a million bucks.

I wanna use a Remo head. I heard a lot of bad things about Evans.

Re: Superphonic help

Well you could try a powerstroke 3 with a dot on it. I personally would use a CS reverse or and Emperor X just because of the size of the drum. A powerstroke X should work nice too. If you want a litle darker sound you can also go with a coated Pinstripe but I've never really heard a good snare sound out of a pinstipe unless it's cranked.

Re: Superphonic help

Remo makes top quality heads also and would have a similar line. As Tamamamama suggested, any of those remos would be a fine choice as long as you get the sound you like from them.

Re: Superphonic help

I had a 1959 Ludwig Black Onyx Rock kit way back in the days.

I used the Remo Weather Kings. That was the best bang for the buck. And the never went out of tune. Since they were originally design for out door use and temperature differential. They are thick heads and help with the resonance.

As Mr. Der mentioned, they also had the built in adjustable mufflers. I also used the strap type muffler on the bass batter head.

I also forgot to mention I have a 1979 Ludwig Acrolite and the CS works wonders on it

Re: Superphonic help

Hey guy's thank for the responce's. I'll try the CS. I'm just a big fan of the sound Bonham had. A sales man at GC told me that Bonham's Superphonic had an internal muffel. I don't know if that's true. Does anybody know?

Re: Superphonic help

Hi Christopher J here. Re the internal muffler on the drum in question. I have a 1966 supra and a 1967 Acro and they both have internal mufflers as stock. I don't know of any that do not, but then it might depend on the market, and age. Anyway good luck with the heads and why not the ludwig heads? The heads are usually chosen when the drum is designed, not that you couldn't improve or change the sound to be more to your personal liking. Let us know what you choose.
