Guys, just bought a second hand DW Kit 4yr old - the guy I bought them from put new drum "Evans" white drum heads on all the kit- I'm used to playing Remo Pinstripe's and not gone on the solid white skins -

I was going to change but not sure what to do - also checked out the DW site and they talk about not putting layered skins on i.e. I supose pinstripe - but I get an icky feeling off the Evans stuff - feels cheap or soemthing when I play -

Besides the old way of tuning by ear - is there someithing I need to do differently to get the perfect pitch with DW - each drum has a key stamped on the inside of the shell - how do I get this key in place - any advise would be appreciated, Cheers Phil.

I use to tune by ear also till I got a tipany plasti done on my left ear due to a punctured ear drum.

Now I use the DRUM DIAL and Remo coated heads on my Gretsch kit with resonance rings. So read up on the drum dial and see if it suites you.

Phil I just put all Evans heads on my DW and it sounds killer. I have been a Remo Pinstripe man for 20+ years and I am glad I tried the Evans. I didn't go with the coated heads because previous experience with them left me disappointed. I put Evans EC1 s on my 8, 10 and 12" toms and EC2 s on the 14 and 16" toms.

I used to tune by ear using tuning forks (the real old fashioned way), but I took Tainojim's advice and picked up a Drum Dial for around $55 US dollars and both of my kits have never sounded better, not to mention the fact it didn't take 14 hours to tune up.
