Drum insults

what are the most insulting things you've heard from non drummers?
mine are:
"drumming is just noise"
"you just hit stuff"
"all the drums sound the same"
"play quieter please.."

all very ignorant and annoying comments if you ask me..

now now no reason to get to upset about us talking about him.
I think sometimes you just have to take it though.
That kinda like I would say the biggest infulince for me drumming is lars.

You hear some people same some really nasty things about him and that was before the napster thing (yea the guy is an A** hole) but I still love to liston to his licks even to this day.
I havent own any of the new albums starting with re-load (I bought load but was very disaponted)

But I think that is somthing we all have to live with.
The other fourm I was on almost everyone loved paiste I hate them and I have owned several, and I got rid of them very quickly after buying them I love zildjian and it's not just for the name. If I ever find a better sounding cymbal I will get those instead.

But it's just like the insults. When I was in high school you had the band and you had the drum line. We never consdered ourselfs to be apart of the band but try exsplaining that to anyone that never played in band.
I hate even to this day telling people I was in band because it is always one of the 2 same replys.
1. band nerd
2. cool I was in the band too.

I hate those words BAND NERD and even some people will call you that for just playing anisturment despite that they love to lison to music probably at some point almost every day of their lives.

What can be done to change these people.
That what we need to be asking our selves just like trying to promote music education to everyone.

Every time I meet someone with kids I always ask if they would be interstead in learning drums and the answer is always yea but they are so loud and I really dont want them in my house they drive me crazy already so I tell them about practice pads and things like that and i even offer free lesons to just try and get more people hooked on playing and it's almost always the same thing NO.

We should be taking an active part in promoting this love we have by trying to be the best every day and show the world what we are made of because we are a dying breed being replaced by the drum machine (what a horable thought that is) thanks to a lot of pop and rap music that just really dosnt have to much place for real drums.

so whos with me on this.

Yeah it's true that the drum machines are having a bigger role nowadays but I don't think our jobs are in danger. There will always be a need for drummers. No matter how advanced the artificial intelligence may get, there is no way on earth to replicate the creativity or the expressional and artistic playing by some of the greats.

In terms of the whole "band nerd" thing I think movies like Drumline and American Pie (a stretch) have helped to bring some respect to the bandies..

but then again, drummers were and always will be cool.. its the male flutists that have it bad.. haha

It wasn't a direct insult but I remember way back in symphonic band days the director obivously wasn't a drum fan and we ended up sitting around doing nothing a lot of the time. It seemed that he just he tolerated us because the music called for drums......of course we sometimes became intolerable because we were bored.

Next time you are at band practice and someone throws out a drummer insult. Very calmly and quietly hand them your sticks and say "If its so easy you do it" Warning this may backfire if the guy turns out to be a better drummer than you!

If someone insults drumming, they probably don't play drums, so I think by offering the person the chance to prove that it is easy, you have a very high probability of them just making a fool of themselves or just refusing to try. Either way, you pretty much win.

If the person does turn out to be a better drummer than you, then either they are an arrogant drummer looking to show off, a drummer who now hates drums for some reason, or they are naturally talented and will probably end up loving drums eventually due to the discovery of their talent for which you would be responsible in this situation.
I guess another way this could happen would be that you are really just a poor drummer, in which case the person insulting you would probably not be wrong in their insult
