Help!! Car stereo.

I recently installed a CD player in my '96 Ford. Everything was going fine, I was adjusting my settings when;

I got a loud pop and my speakers went very quiet.
Now I have to keep the unit very quiet or the speakers distort quickly and when I turn it on or off I get a pop.

Right now I'm assuming the player is 8ohms and I know the speakers are 4ohms and the difference is causing the trouble.

If anyone has any knowledge on this I would be very appreciative.

I would say that there is a good chance that you sent a power surge to the speakers.
the ohms arnt as important as the watts, and if it is an aftermarket head unit then it is probably only putting out about 17-30 watts and your speakers should be able to go to around 100 even if they are factory.

did you instal the unit or did you have someone do it?

I can tell you right now that your speakers are blown and are going to have to be replaced.
you shouldnt have to worry about the ohms untill you start pushing a lot more power thru them.

if you are still haveing problems with it try calling up crutchfeild and some one there would be able to tell you.

It is an aftermarket unit. 4x45w. I didn't have it up that loud. I told someone else about it and he thought because they all went simultaneously I might have blown a diode in the player rather than the speakers going. This may be right also because I've thrashed old speakers before and they all go at different times rather than all at once.

I've got a mate with a power meter that I might use to test everything and see how it's going before taking it into a shop.

yea thats a real good chance as well because I couldnt see them all going at once either.

the only thing about ripping into your cd player is that it could still be covered under a manufactures warinty agenst defects in the head unit.

I have never heard of somthing like that happening before but the only thing I can think of is that there was a power surge somewhere nut I am sure you have a fuse on there to stop that but then again a fuse dosnt always work.

well if you have any other questions I will try and help out as much as I can.
Im good at installing them and finding whats wrong with some of them but not ripping the thing apart to figure it that was my freinds area of expertise.

Yeah, It's not under warranty but I think I'll take it back out and take it to a shop to fix anyway. Thanks.
