Drums too loud?

Today, like always, I went into my basement and started playing. After 30 mins the lights went out and my mom came down. She then lifted the snare and stated that, quote:"Until you figure out a way to quiet down that noise, you won't get this back (points at snare)."
I've been playing for years and this never, ever happened. She used to encourage me to play more often. But it seems that ever since I started playing metal and holding loud practices with my friends, she's been regretting ever buying me a kit. I've been talking to my dad and he says that when we build a new house next spring, he'll have a soundproof room for me... thats another 7 months!
Does anybody have any ideas on how to dampen the sound or somehow make a deal so I can get back my snare and keep playing?

Ask if you can build a drum shield.

Plexiglass and regular hinges or piano hinges.
