Firstly, Australians are mad for good, hard rock. Because of our isolation (especially in Perth) we have a very strong local music scene. It's not so popular, commercial radio is still playing Cold Chisel and INXS like they're the next big thing, but we've got a national radio station here called triple J that is dedicated to unearthing new and local talent. They discovered Silverchair, Wolfmother, Killing heidi, Grinspoon, The Living End, Youth Group and tons of other acts who are doing well (at least over here).
Despite my extensive live portfolio, you must understand, this is over a 10 year period. If I were living in England I'd have probably seen all those acts in 1 month.
Triple J does a good job keeping us current with what's happening in the rest of the world. They were the only station playing Smells Like Teen Spirit when it first came out. Commercial radio has only just started playing that now. If you go to their website you can listen to them online. I'd strongly recomend it if you want to check out what we're listening to down under.
As I previously stated, check out Parkway Drive or Shihad if you want to hear some great hard rock from this corner of the world. Shihad are actually from New Zealand, but we claim everything good from there anyway, like Russel Crowe, until he became an embarrassment, then we gave him back. |
