What Do You Drive?

What vehicles do we drive? And Why?

I drive a 1997 Dodge Avenger.

It makes me happy, and my bass drum fits perfectly off to one side in the backseat, toms, and hardware sets right on the other side of the seat, snare upright in the middle, with my cymbals resting upright behind the passenger side seat. All this leaves my trunk free for my huge stereo system.

Re: What Do You Drive?

I wasn't tryin to get on ya bout your car, just..it seems you wanna go fast with it..but they really aren't that great for speed.
Anyways, I drive a 93' lesabre I got 2 yrs. ago as my first car. It was free so I never complain. I may...just may talk to my uncle about getting his 97' eldorado, but I think teh money I would pay him for that would b ebetter spent on going to college :P And drum stuff. I am though on the hunt for an 80-87' corolla, ae86 would definately be sweet, but I'd take a te72 if worse came to worse :P And with that, I'd like a 13b or 20b rotary to drop in er' to Then again, if I couldn't find a corolla, but found an rx7 or eunos cosmos I'd for sure live with it lol.

Don't worry about my car; sensetive subject. It's just that so many people try to make a good car out of something that wasn't intended to be made a good car, and people try to knock them down. The term "rice" is applied to such things as Cavaliers and Civics runnin' around with hardly any performance parts, but most of them are bought from "joke" companies like APC, and StreetGlow. Those are generally chintzy products that don't impress you, nor does the over-sizes window stickers those morons always plaster their rear window with.

Truth be known, I hated my car when I bought it. My previous car broke down and I was without a ride. I knew a friend that had just crashed his Avenger and was only lookin' for $800. I told him if he took payments on it (considering my rough spot) I'd give him a grand for it. I bought it, and despised it. I liked the interior layout because it's identical to the Eclipse/Talon dash config (with the exception of the console), and the look of the car was nice, but it handled like hell, and was slow as death. Plus the size of the cabin was huge. It made me feel like I was very far away from things, and not in an enjoyable environment. So I was down in the dumps about losing my fast car, losing my apartment, losing my job, and losing my girlfriend at the time... now I'm stuck in some slowass hunk of crap I didn't want in the first place... I may as well make it more fun. So I started buying some things that I wanted it to have. After a week I had already dumped over $600 in repars to it, and tossed a $3000 stereo in her. Then I realized it had no voltage gague (semi important when running 3200 watts from two amps and a line driver to 8 speakers and a humongus sub), so I had the inventor of the triple gauge pod create on for my car and paint it to match the interior. Now I had two more options for things to monitor. Hence my Volts, Vacuum, and Oil Temp gagues.
Since then I've gotten pretty carried away with my super air flow converter, auto timer, and some other fun gadgets, but hey... I'm in my car more than I am home... so I might as well transform my car into something I find comfortable.

As far as your car choices... I deeply understand about being in a car you don't necessarily love. This Avenger is my 9th vehicle that I've owned outright. Among all of my friends, we've been through a ton of vehicles. Most of my friends have always had faster cars, so I've always just known how to upgrade what I have to keep up with those guys. The RX-7's you're looking for are hopefully 3rd gens... anything older than that and you're better off with your LeSabre. I drove a 2.8L LeSabre around for quite some time... damn thing used to vapor lock and make me walk the rest of the way to work, lol. Actually, that's no better than the RX-7's vapor lock issue I guess.

Re: What Do You Drive?

I drive a 2001 jeep cherokee I need a little bit of space to haul stuff, and occasionally pull a light trailer. The 4 wheel drive comes in handy in the Winter. It gets me where I want to go, I do wish it was a little better on gas, but it's paid for.

Cherokee's are nice; especially when you get the 4.0L high output version.

...2.8l? Never heard of one, 3.8 yes. And why instead of dropping so much into the avenger...just get something else? I'd rather have a car I liked than have one I don't and attempt to make it nice/so I like it. What kinda car you have before the avenger anyways?
And no, I love my lesabre, just wish the engine was more efficient :P Roomy and comfy as, well I love the space. Was the lockup cause by the intake manifold? Cause yea, the GM were idiots and used a plastic manifold...bad stuff happened and caused the leak of coolant into the intake area lol. Luckily that hasn't happened to me.

I drive a 1995 Saturn LS1
Easy on the gas, not many horses behind it. 1.9L, FWD, 4-speed auto. Wish it was 5-speed manual....but it gets me from point a to point b, so I'm a happy camper for now.

Finger was off a key. 3.8L is correct. The 2.8L was optional in the Century and the Cutlass... a tad different from the LeSabre. Vapor lock problems in those cars was blamed on faulty fuel pumps, but I doubt that's really the culprit.

Why upgrade instead of scrap? Because I see potential in things that most people don't. It's always been part of my job as a designer to pick out positives and work with what I have. Truthfully I can't think of another car that would make me as happy as the Avenger does. For what I need, it's perfect. The back seat is humongus, as is the trunk. There's plenty of head room, and foot room for both the driver and passenger. The only things that made me not like it were the openness of the cabin (it felt very plain, and too tall; like a small truck cab almost), turning radius (awful, but doable), the seatbelts (not quite the best design, and also not very long), and the lack of torque (very slow take offs, and low gear accelleration). The car is great, it just lacks a powerful motor. It's the same identical motor out of the Mitsubishi Eclipse RS of the same year, so it's doggy and blah without a turbo (Hence they made a turbo Eclipse, and a turbo Avenger). Granted the GS-T and GSX were based off the 4g63 motor, and the RS has the 420a motor. The difference is that the 4g63 was the heir to the DSM era and people were drawn to that. Hey, at least my 420a doesn't crankwalk every other week, lol. They're both 2.0L motors that produce about 140hp (136hp in the 4g63, 140hp in the 420a), it just so happens that Mitsu didn't want to keep using the Chrysler engine for their faster models (bad for business).

I might have a lot of money into it, but most of it is stereo and repairs. Why get another used car? You're just buying into new problems. at least if I keep fixing my Venge I know what's not been replaced yet. I decided to buy the Avenger when my Probe GT died because the amount of work and cash it would have taken for me to enjoy the car would have been twice as much as the Avenger. My GT was already a fast car, but I'd have sunk the same amount of cash into the appearance and sound system as I am in the Venge.

Overall It's gratifying to pull up next to someone at a light that sees your car and thinks they know exactly what you've got under the hood... Then you leave them stunned with their mouth open, wondering what the hell just happened.

Re: What Do You Drive?

Yeah I had an '89 Dodge Spirit I was fixing up. I got it almost ready to hit the road and the damned thing cracked it's crank shaft. That was the first time I'd ever seen that problem before.
