Its worse if they actually play the drums. Its sad talking to a drummer who doesn't understand anything about their instrument.
I really hate to see is drummers who get
ahead of themselves. I know alot of the more experienced drummers here see it all the time and might even suspect many of the younger members here of it. When you start playing, you don't want to just play AC/DC. Eighth notes get boring after a while, just going over and over again on the hats, 2 and 4 beats, you know what I mean. You don't really begin to appreciate simplicity until you have been playing for a while. You have to learn respect for a slow, simple groove. You don't realize the potential of FEEL right away.
That being said, beginners just want to dive in and immerse themselves in things they can't do. It can be really discouraging trying to do things right away and realizing how difficult they are. When that happens there are three options: Put the sticks down and forget drums; Keep playing, but make no effort to start slow, tell yourself that you are actually good (in other words, fool yourself with the illusion that you can do anything right away); or, the last and best option, you can actually learn. It might be slow and hard, but it's really the only way to get good, unless of course you are a prodigy and don't have to try at all, in which case you wouldn't even have to choose any of these options as far as deciding to learn.
Anyway, the drummers who choose option two are my least favorite drummers. It really bothers me to see somebody who brags about their drumming abilities, but can barely play a basic rock beat, and even then can't keep it in time. Some of these guys claim they practice 3 hours a day and have been drumming since they were 10. Usually it isn't quite this bad, but there are alot of people I know who sit down behind the kit and try to play a blast beat without ever practicing with double pedals and then believe they executed it well. It's this kind of stuff that I am annoyed by more than people trying to relate to my instrument
