Mike portnoy leaves dream theater Okay guys, first of all, I was really surprised that this is not on here yet, either nobody has found out or everybody is just plain to depressed to log on to DSC.
So Mike left Dream Theater for AVENGED SEVENFOLD, To me that is like leaving a Super Model for some Dirt.
Now while Mike is off doing his thang. Dream Theater will still be doing theirs', But who will they get as a drummer?
I was thinking that if they were to pick a already established drummer they should pick
1. Terry Bozzio
2. Virigl Donati
3. Thomas Lang
And if they were to pick to a "No name drummer"
Then maybe they would hold a contest like The Mars Volta did.
Thoughts.... FEELINGS
LET'S HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS WHOLE ORDEAL. |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater I was going to post a thread like this...
But isn't that amazing? With all of his tattoos??
He said he had a better time with A7x than he did with the old DT. |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater Hmmm. Thomas Lang in DT... I don't like Bozzio, I used to, but I would be upset if he replaced Portnoy. He is even more of a show off than Portnoy is and he doesn't even do it with his playing anymore. He just relies on his monster kit to turn heads. I like what he did with Zappa, but whatever.
Thomas Lang would be a good replacement. He is locked in in the same way Mike is. Very technical. I would love to see what he could do in DT since he doesn't actually do much in the music scene. He has been the Super-Clinician for a long time. It would be cool to see if he actually has good taste in drumming with music.
I'm disappointed in Portnoy leaving DT, but I don't think its like leaving a super model for dirt. A7X is a great band. DT is awesome as well. I don't think Portnoy is a good replacement for the rev, still, like before, but only because I would rather A7X break up than have a different drummer. I wonder why Mike made that decision, though! Who would do that? He has it made in DT and he is like 15 years older than the rest of A7X. Maybe like 13 years. Idk, but I bet he isn't as much of a party guy as M shadows and Zacky Vengeance and the rest. |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater Mike said hat he had a better time with the project bands (like A7x)
than he did with DT over 20 years. (?) He may know something we don't though....
I cant see Bozzio in DT either. But Lang seems nice too. |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater This just in, Lars Ulrich and Joey Jordison are fighting over the position.
I was liking Ulrich for a wile, but you know what happened to metallica... They got mellower and he seems a bit of a show off... Jordison would probably make DT a Whole new speed! JJ might even throw in some breakdowns!
I was hoping for either Samus from old Abigail Williams:
He just has a certain style that Portnoy lacked. His kit is about half the size of Portnoy's!
And his ROLLS And Fills are as smooth as a button. I was also hopping Danny Cary who also has a smaller kit. His kit has really cool electronics and His own signature snare on it. Another option was Martin Lopez of Opeth, His drumming and percussion are flawless, and the only reason he left in 2006 was a sickness! My last pick was Blake Richardson from BTBAM his style is influenced by of Mike's and also Bozzio And manny others such as Grohl.
My thoughts are the drummer will have in some way influenced Mike ( a joke, like the beginning of the post) or that he will be heavily influenced by Mike himself... Some friends of mine from new york, a thrash band have changed drastically since I first met them, from their line up to their sound. Though I had been able to receive free demos in the past, I bought the CD this time. Since he started playing, I have started to except the new sounds. And this new drummer doesn't use Hi hats! |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater Lopez would be awesome. Can't say I would be happy if Lars or JJ took the spot I doubt Danny Carey would do it, he would be the one I would pick first, but we will see.
I agree that the replacement will be either an Mike Portnoy influence or influenced drummer. It makes much sense. |

My guess would be Billy. |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater I would not be happy if Lars or Joey hopped into Mike's throne, I'd rather see Lang or Donati. |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater I was so angry when i saw this. I heard it over FB because DT updated thier page saying that mike had left.. It is what it is, but it depresses me to see Portnoy, one of my all time favorite drummers, who is amazing, to leave a very unique, different, and talented band, like Dream Theater, for a boring, average, and undifferent band like A7X. This is just my opinion, some of you will disagree, but i just think A7X is to much of the usual rock band nothing that unique about them, and of corse i dont mean to offend anyone who likes them, purly my opinion. About the replacement, i love Lang he is probably my favorite drummer, he would be perfect for the job , but idk DT wont be the same without Portnoy, even with an amazing drummer like Lang. I hope portnoy will change his mind and come back one day... |

Re: Mike portnoy leaves dream theater I don't think that A7X is a phenomenon kind of band or anything like it (neither is DT, they are just skilled and have some good stuff), the thing that made A7X amazing and different was Jimmy Sullivan. This guy was not ordinary. I don't care if anybody doesn't like A7X, but you've gotta respect The Rev. He was a very talented guy, even if he did get just a bit over-rated.
I don't think it will be hard to replace Portnoy, the way he plays isn't all that unique, he just uses alot of odd time signatures and polyrhythms to define his sound. Sure, DT will be a bit different, but it won't be like A7X without Jimmy Sullivan. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
