Nice assortment of choices... You need more genres there, rock can be anything from Elvis to Metallica and farther. Also, there are other styles of music, funk, dance/techno, punk, and many others. Making a choice between jazz and rock is ridiculous unless you only play one of the two and therefore only have one to prefer, but I would answer metal if somebody asked me what music I like to play. Since I am not given the choice of metal or any other genre or sub-genre there, I am forced to answer rock, which is not entirely accurate. What about all the people who play neither of those kinds of music? What will they answer to this poll? Not only is this thread misnomered, it is a difficult choice. Unless you have more choices, this thread should be called "do you like to play rock or jazz?", not the current name, which suggests a vast selection of genres.

Sorry if it seems like I am flying off the handle at you, I don't mean to, its just very difficult to choose and I thought I would post what I think about it

I Pick funk! I love to throw little tripplets into my groves with that nice chad sexton double tap, and i love me some ghost notes! 311 is my influence for drumming almost entirely, you should put funk as an option

Lets see... Mostly classic rock, classic metal and blues, but I also groove on alternative rock, a little punk, a touch of country.... And I'll try anything.

Everyone is influenced constantly in one way or another,some on a daily basis. I for one have been fortunate enough to have it been music since i am self taught. I can and have played everything from Polkas to cRAP, Jazz is not included on my resime simply because the theory of jazz was to complex for me to grasp onto with interest, to me personally and i mean no disrespect, i can listen to some but would rather observe a jazz drummer in action because it amazes me how their timing against the other instuments just seams to fall into place, to me it sounds like 6 musicians playing different songs all at the same time ! I have worked with in my book some of the best musicians in rock history, some of my idols will never cross my path, Buddy Rich and the likes of him. Man i can watch hours of footage on these "Drum Heroes" and think where did and why did music categories go in so many different directions, so many i coud'nt even begin to name them all. So i call it influenced. So many of you answered WHAT, but not WHY you play what you do. That is only half of your real answer, GREAT QUESTION THOUGH ! ! Stay True

I know what you're saying about Jazz, Oldschool... insane stuff, I don't think I could ever fully grasp playing it either, but like you , I could watch them groove on their kinky off-beats for hours.

The other half that was not asked, the "why" is as easy as it is complex. Through the late 70's and 80's I was a touring drummer and did openers for the "big boys", the stuff we now know as Classic Rock and Classic Metal became such an integral part of my life that it became a passion more than a choice. I miss those days...
