I agree, but muffling should really only be used enough to lessen the amount of ringing coming from the drums. I'm a bit old fashion, and I still use the muffler Belt type on my bass drums and the original Richie Rings on the snare.

On the other hand, I remove the muffling for Jazz playing when it's really needed. It seems to put more emphases on the hard beats.
