some good tips

well i think when playing first gig ALWAYS have a small table behind u with plenty of water and drumsticks seriously!...my first gig went bad when i broke a drumstick in half and couldnt find a replacement so i played the whole gig one-handed and lowered the lights so no one saw it was horrible.to keep calm just count or do it in your head if not you either usually skip a note or jump to another section of the song and just dont look at the crowd just at the drums and focus!

well skulldrum that didnt have much to do with twirling but still good advice. to get good at anything you just have to practice, and that includes twirling. im decent at it.

Re: Stick twirling

For me, stick twirling is very difficult. I practice moving it between my four fingers but it's not very fast. Hardwork is the key to success here. Keep on practicing!

Thomas Lang twirls, throws, and catches sticks with good success -- some videos.

Re: Stick twirling

If you keep your cymbals up high like I do, this is a decent looking little trick for songs with a fast break in the music....hit the snare with both sticks, then fake twirl both sticks at the same time (takes some practice) while lifting your arms up, then smash them cymbals. The key is to use the rebound off the snare to start the motion, when you finally do it smoothly it looks preeeetty rad.

I also do one that is an illusion mostly, same kind of break....move like you are going to hit the snare with both sticks, but only hit with your weak hand and throw the other in the air at the same time. Lift your weak arm up as you go to catch the stick and hit both cymbals as the stick comes down.

Re: Stick twirling

Thanks for the explanation James. I'm game to try any new tricks. I'm hopeless at twirling but I keep practicing along with other skills. I'd love to be proficient at it. I wouldn't necessarily do it often because I'm not the flashy type, but I want a complete bag of tricks at my disposal.

Re: Stick twirling

Stick twirling is truly fun to watch. When I go to band concerts, it's because I love to watch the drummer do the stick twirl.

Does anyone actually twirl the stick with good success? What other stick tricks can you do?
I do the same thing
