Stick twirling

Right now the only stick trick I can pull off is "fake twirling" the stick between my index and middle finger much like you would do a pencil. It's more of an optical illusion than anything else.

Does anyone actually twirl the stick with good success? What other stick tricks can you do?

I can twirl them like you would a batton so it looks cool and I can take a stick with my right index finger and make it do a full circle around my finger without touching it.

I can twirl it pretty good with my right hand, and I can go from traditional to matched or the other way around with my left hand, but I can't do the fake twirling

Twirling is an art I haven't mastered. I've tried the traditional to match bit, especially since I started playing match and switched to traditional for pipe snare but find it hard to play cymbals using traditional grip.

Does anyone think that fingers, length of fingers more specifically, help or hinder stick twirling? I'm wondering if maybe my fingers are too short for stick twirling.

I dont think that finger length affects twirling ability. Cause most of the twirls use the top joints of your fingers.

I know hand and finger size can affect your ability to play certain instruments (i.e. my hands are too small to play a normal-sized cello), but as far as I know it doesn't affect twiriling. In fact, I would think having smaller fingers would help, as you had less to get in the way of you sticks.

I would think that having longer fingers would make drum twirling a lot easier actually. Think about a pencil. It's a lot easier to twirl a pencil in your hands than a drumstick. You would just get more leverage. However, I don't think it's too big of a deal.

My music teacher freaks out when I try to teirl the sticks w/o success, she said I could break the other instruments in the Music room, and I thought she was worried that I'd poke my eye out!!

I can (at the end of the song) through my sick in the air, play a couple more beats, then when it comes down I hit one cymbal and it hits another at the same time.

Wow! juan that is awesome! I need to try that sometime. Yea all I can do is the fake twirling, but hey it gives you something to do when you have a silent part. And the chicks love it!
