Who here knows how to read music? These days it seems like kids are just learning how to jam and play beats and fills. No one ever wants to learn how to read snare solos or read music. It's a lost art really. How good are all of you with reading drum music? I can read it for the most part but am really slow with interpretation. I wouldn't be able to sightread anything remotely complicated. Of course, this come with practice. |

| | | I know what I'm looking at but can't really play fluently while reading it, often I'll have to work it out bit by bit and piece it all together.
Definitely something I'm going to keep learning though. |

| | | Yeah, if its a simple piece I can probably play it. But if it gets into a complicated set part or something, then im stuck. And I play bass too, and reading bass music is a whole different ball game. |

| | | I guess as a drumming beginner, the poll doesn't quite fit my music-reading capabilites. I can read other kinds of music (clarinet, sax, piano, guitar), I just haven't gotten good enough at reading percussion sheet music yet. But I've always thought that reading music was important, probably because all my music teachers emphasized it so much. So I do intend to hone my skills. |

| | | Since I joined a pipe band as a pipe snare, I've had to learn to read snare music. The more I practice, the better I get at it, but it does take practice. Set music is easier for me to read. Each instrument gets its own line and marking, and it's easier to follow. Snare music gets rather tight and complicated, but it's fun once you get the hang onf it. |

| | | Although I like teaching myself, I really do wish that I could have a teacher because I think a professional could really help me learn to read the sheet music. It's very different from the music on any other instrument I've played, and I wish I could afford to have someone work with me on it. |

| | | That's one of the main reasons I wanted to go back to an instructor. I need to improve my ability to read sheet music. It's going to be really hard to teach myself this if I play something off of music incorrectly and think I'm right when I'm actually wrong. I'll just never know. |

| | | Yeah, and then you practice wrong, and it gets built into your memory, and it's really hard to fix the technique if someone corrects you. I had a dance teacher that would say: "Practice does not make perfect; practice makes permanent." So true. |
