snare comfort

Hey everyone, I've been noticing lately that I'm not really comfortable and can't do fast fills on the snare and transition from a beat to a snare fill at a quick pace.... What I'm really asking is are there any exercises I can do on the snare to gain speed, skill and comfort on the snare? thanks in advance.

Re: snare comfort

Hey IE, hows it goin?

Do you mean fills strictly on the snare? or just fills across the set?
I don't know about any exercises, but I would recommend changing up the placement of your snare and/or toms.
I just flattened out my snare this week. Before, it was just slightly tilted toward me, but now it is almost completely flat. I wasn't having any problems before, but I love it this way. It is a lot more comfortable.

Are you having trouble because of something like that? or is it just your musclular abilities?

hey butter haven't talked to you in a while...
I have my snare tilted toward me too right now. I'll try flattening it out.. It could be my musical ability too... I want to know how to do ghost notes on the snare better too.. I'll try adjusting it and tell you how it goes. Thanks.

Re: snare comfort

My snare is nearly parallel with the floor as well.
I've found it's easier to play like this.
To get good at ghost notes you've got to play more ghost notes. There's no magic formula; just time.

I always thought that was the magic formula.

I'll adjust the snare, and I'll totally practice ghost notes more. Thanks guys.

Re: snare comfort

To make fills (transitions from drum to drum, etc) easier position the drums in a tighter pattern. I'll post a pic later due to my set being packed away in my Mustang right now. The principal is pretty simple: a closely grouped drum-set requires less energy and movement from your extremities. It's all in the wrist. The arms are mostly for show.

Re: snare comfort

Thanks sal. I've been moving the drums closer together and experimenting with the positions. So should I see how close I can go without touching basically?

Re: snare comfort

Rim to rim without touching each other is my flavor.

And my drum-heads are mounted on the same plane in relation to the drum it's adjacent too.

I find it easier to travel around the drum-set like this.
