Re: Latin I play some latin beats on drumset.
I will just organise some of those which i play well, by where they originate: Brazil
Bossa Nova (50s/60s brazilian pop music)
Samba (carnival stuff)
Baiao (Northern brazilian beat) Cuba
Bembe (african sounding; folkloric music, )
Songo (beat written for drumkit)
Afro-Cuban 6/8 (Don't know if this is official, sounds good) USA
Son Clave (3-2)
Son Clave (2-3)
Most traditional brazilian beats are in 2/4.
Elsewhere in the latin world, they are predominately 4/4.
The Son Clave beat is something that will fit to a son clave rhythm. It is not officially recognised as a rhtyhm; i actually learnt this from a Peter Erskine book; and I have used it more than any other non-brazilian beat.
Might want to check out some jazz drummers like Elvin Jones, Art Blakely that play latin beats in their playing on the drumkit.
The Drummer Collective book 'Afro Cuban rhythm for drumkit' (Bob Weiner/Frank Malabe) and 'Brazilian rhtyhms for drumkit' (Duduka Da Fonseca). Is where i got most of my material. I believe the Ed Uribe text is very respected too.
Horacio El Negro Hernandez is quite a technician and very creative and musical. He can play a son clave with his hihat foot and just play and solo. He is one latin orientated drummer.
But there are so many more great latin drummers.
Thats it. |
