Best Drum fill/groove Apologizes if this has already been discussed -I'm new here. Anyway, was wondering what people thought was/is the best drum fill or groove. Who hasn't air played along with Phil Collins on his classic tom fill on "In the Air Tonight". Regarding grooves what about Steve Gadd's groove on "50 ways to leave your lover" (which I just learned).
Everyone of us has a fill/groove or two that hit a nerve, made us sit back & take notice, when we first heard it...
Thanks for sharing!! |

Re: Best Drum fill/groove One of my favorite riffs is on "Heard It On The X" by ZZ Top.
Another one is "One Way or Another" by Cactus.
It's got allot of drive. |

Re: Best Drum fill/groove One fill I love is Mitch Mitchell's in 'Little Wing'. The fill patterns are similar throughout but the second fill in particular I absolutely love.
Very musical and is perfectly formed for the song. It has these lovely little doubles within triplets that always bring a smile to my face. |

Re: Best Drum fill/groove Thanks guys, yes I know them all well...
Mitch Mitchell is of particular note to me as I really started playing the kit, listening to "Are You Experienced" & "Axis, Bold as Love". Man I knew every beat of those early Hendrix albums!
In the same vein, what about Michael Giles, King Crimson, Court of the Crimson King. Forget what song, maybe "Moonchild" or "I Talk to the Wind", talk about classy snare work -WOW!!
All of these should be required listening to any/all drummers! |

The first Brush workout I learned was "Up From The Skies". I was sixteen at the time. Mitch is not easy to follow, but I nailed it eventually.
It was that snare rip that was a little hard to get accomplished in the yesteryears. Since I couldn't afford drumming lessons, I learned to play by ear. |

Re: Best Drum fill/groove How about Gone by Miles Davis.
I'm going through Jazz playing in my lessons at the moment so my teacher has set me homework to listen to as much jazz and swing as possible. This track really caught my attention. Very neat. |

Re: Best Drum fill/groove WOW!! Kudos BrassMon... that Miles Davis song was awesome -do you know who the drummer was? I also have say that your teacher is quite insightful, I assume that your music of choice is not jazz/big band... my first teacher played with Harry James (trumpet player Big Band era) and taught me the value of learning as many types of music as possible. One thing I found in my 47 years of playing is that my taste and jobs change, I never listened to country, but found myself in an "Urban Cowboy" band 30 years ago... about 20 years ago I got into a latin jazz band and was fortunate to have one of the members teach me the traditional percussion instruments and rhythms. You never know where you'll be or what you'll end up playing. Thanks for sharing... |

You are correct that jazz isn't my natural home, I began in a garage rock band and even now still play in a hard rock/stoner rock band. But I appreciate that the skills in jazz and other styles like the latin beats are transferable.
For instance the use of accents in Samba and the Mambo cascara patterns are great. And with Jazz you only need to look at all the amazing rock drummers like Micth Micthell and Ginger Baker to see how Jazz influenced there style. So I owe my teacher a lot for helping expose me to that. Plus he says a good drummer is one that can blag any gig whatever style |

Re: Best Drum fill/groove If you need some latin jazz, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe.
Eddie Palmieri "Puerto Rico" Willie Colon & Ruben blades
Aguanile (Hector Lavoe)
And yes I also play Salsa with my brother in law's band. Don't tell me this don't make your feet move. It's all TAINO Music. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
