Some trouble with expanding drum ideas

Now I have learned a lot through drum lessons, songs, youtube, and other ideas. For instance I learned a 6 note Kick RLRLR and doing alternations between using Tom1 snare snare snare snare. Mind you I am using a metronome with this. I learned different ideas I made up for it and while I can do these really fast with no problem and I do understand that once you know the sticking pattern then you can move around the kit. But I have trouble with that, moving off grid and messing around. I lose the pattern and it becomes a mess. What ideas or practices can I utilize to perfect doing that?

Re: Some trouble with expanding drum ideas

I would say just practice some rudiments. The kick RLRLR pattern is good, but you could more easily expand if you were to start practicing a six stroke roll and some double patterns in sets of six. Maybe stick a flam in there somewhere and make it Kick RL flam L kick. Mess around with accents.

Hope this helps, happy drumming!

Hold back on the technical drumming for a little while and have some fun for a change.

Mimic some of your favorite songs for a little while.

Then, find your own style of drumming.

In doing so, you'll find the music within your heart for creativity.

Watch out for that slump that all drummers go through here and there.

So try something different.

Drumming is an art.
