That is all up to you and your budget. You can get a nice set of sabian Xs20 cymbals for a reasonable price. I used them for quite a while and have never had a problem with them. I play metal primarily among the many other styles of music i play though. What sound are you going for? Brighter or darker?

Hi ,
You could buy a set "off the shelf " as it were , as quoted by STN above , and im sure they would be fine . Another option would be to firstly , research what you are intending to buy , I dont just mean the price tag or make etc....... why do drum kits have or need cymbals ? , what do they add to the music that you enjoy . Think about your kit and how it sounds , you wana compliment that sound . There are many variables involved when it comes to cymbals as with most things drum kit related , gaining a little understanding now will last a life time , hopefully so will the cymbals !! .

I wouldn't rule out buying second hand either , as long as you see them before buying , not a good idea to buy anything drum related "blind" .

Hope this is of some use , let us know how it goes .

If you can, goe to a drum shop and try before you buy.

Cymbals are an investment that will be with you a long, long time.

Even if you have to wait and save a bit, it's worth it. Personally I would stay away from cymbal packages. Like ZBT's and so on.

Buy for your needs and save in the long run.

Definitely buy used because you'll save a ton of cash. In my experience it takes a long time to realize exactly the sounds you like in a ride cymbal, crash cymbal and hi-hats. And the brand name doesn't really matter that much. I had a very expensive Zyldian ride for years when I finally realized it was way too high in pitch for my liking. I moved to a very dark sounding Sabian. And it's fun to get used cymbals at rock bottom prices at a second hand store or on the internet and find out what they sound like. Sometimes you get pleasantly surprised. If they sound trashy, you can put two on top of each other to have a neat effects cymbal.

I would recommend the Meinl Customs Classic cymbals. They have a great sound and are at the intermediate price level. A pack of these consists of a ride, 2 crashes and a pair of hi-hats. These cost $499 which is really a good deal. Here's a link to them: Amazon.com: Meinl Cymbals CC-141620+18 Classics Custom Matched Set, 14 Inch Hihats/16 Inch Crash/20 Inch Ride: Musical Instruments

There are a lot of great cymbal companies out there, but I've always used Zildjian A's and they've always worked great for me.
