drumcovers! How to do?

Hi there,

Some friends came to me with the idea to play drumcovers, to film it and post it online (like Cobus Potgieter, Machinegunsmith, ...) But what do u recommend to use?

I mean mics, lights, pa-system, ...

You shouldn't need a pa system. Just get the best mic(s) possible and wire them into a recording program on your computer.

Just start making videos and keep improving your setup as you go.

Honestly, it could get a little expensive. You're going to want at least 4 mics for quality recording (snare, bass, 2 overheads), maybe more if you want better. Then, you'll need some sort of audio interface to plug the mics into.
It can lead to probably more than $700. Mine did.
But trust me. Do NOT do covers with a regular camera mic. The quality is really REALLY bad, and usually not even worth watching...even if you have lots of skill.

Yes, of course. But really, you can use whatever you have. Audacity gives a free limited version of their software, but it's a little weird.
Personally (and don't laugh) I like Mixcraft. It is literally the Garageband of Windows (if you have a Mac you CAN use Garageband.) They offer a free trial, and you can still use it after the trial period is over, free of charge, just you can't make mp.3 files. So if you like it, I'd buy it, but it's is by NO MEANS anywhere near a real recording program. But for your purposes, it'll work perfectly. It even has a video aspect, so you can sync up your recordings with your video. Of course, you can also do that on Movie Maker.
But if you're looking for serious recording, then common ones are Logic, or Pro Tools. But I'd only do that if you're serious about recording, not just drum covers.

P.S. I'm so excited! Today I just my new Tascam FW-1804 Sound Interface, and a Behringer MIC 2200 mic pre. It's a sweet setup. I just need to hook up my firewire card, pick up my mic stands, and I'm all set for recording! My space is all set up, and it's exciting!

Peace
Happy recording
Happy drumming

Yes no need for PA at all.

Quality mics on the drums you will be using and condensor overheads wired (XLR preferably) into a mixer so you can get a good levels.

If you're playing to actual music you can then import as an audio file and mix together in i.e. powerdirector

What if i just bought the Zoom Q3HD Recorder? It has a quality mic that picks up drum sound pretty nicely. It saves alot of hastle rather then getting mics. I do intend on getting mics but not just yet.

Heres an example of the quality
