Question Drum Lessons for Beginners?

I've been throwing the idea around of creating a drum lesson product for beginners. Before I go all out and spend hours upon days making a sweet production, I want to hear some feedback from the drummers I would be teaching.

If you are a beginning drummer, would I be someone you would like teaching you how to drum?

What do you want to learn on the drums?

I am open to any and all feedback.

If you would like to hear some stuff I did in the studio with my band Bloom, go to Bloom | Facebook and download our entire album for free.

Bloom also has a song on Rock Band 3 that you can jam out to! The song is called "Fight for Greatness". Here's a vid:
Go ahead and leave a comment below. Let me know what you think about the drum lesson idea. Also, let me know what you think of my drumming. Even if you aren't a beginner I would love to hear your response.

Thanks guys!

Hey, welcome to the forum D00d
Haven't said that in a while haha ^

I would say that you definitely have the experience to be able to teach lessons, but it's hard to tell whether you're a good teacher without an actual lesson. I think anybody can make a decent lesson if they know what they are talking about, and you probably do. I say go for it!

Also, never heard of your band, but I have discovered it now and am heading to FB to check it out!

You're totally right. I wouldn't want to commit to somebody as a teacher either until I was able to see how well they can actually teach. I suppose that is my next step. I'll throw together a few valuable lessons and let you guys check them out for free. Thank you for the feedback!

I would say you can teach Beginners but, and absolutely no offence, but you would need to do a lot more practice - especially in orchestrating other rudiments into your playing and also in independence - those hi hats need to show a strong pulse when playing the ride cymbal.

Hope I didn't offend as you have a great kit and lots of enthusiasm, if you were to teach Beginners and practice at the same time, i'm sure within a year you will be able to teach all levels!

I disagree. While it is a good thing to do, it isn't really necessary. I have noticed it less in a lot of music today, where it was more common years ago. Double bass becoming more prominent is causing hi-hat pulsing to be used in fewer applications.

No offense, but I would argue that your opinion of a practice such as hi-hat pulsing with the ride being mandatory is too orthodox and limiting. Like I said, it's a good thing and worth learning/teaching, but I just think you put too much emphasis on it.

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread or fight someone else's battle, but I just had to comment. I think I might make a thread on this topic!

I do agree with the rudimentary part of your suggestion, but I also think that rudiments can easily scare away new drummers. There needs to be an equal balance between learning what is fun and what is necessary for theory or not immediately applicable.

Hi Butter,

Yes i actually agree with you, it was early when i commented and i hadn't had my morning coffee yet

The hi hat pulse isn't mandatory at all but i would have played on the pulse or another pattern just show show more independence etc for a lessons promo video.

We are all different though and i wish Walter all the best with his teaching!

Learn a rudimnet and learn how to apply it.

A continual lesson without having to change the chapter in a book, sort of speaking.

I feel that it would work as a balance in learning percusions as a whole.

Next on how to apply the beats within the music. After all, timing is important also.

And let's not forget the Moeller Method. The keystone of it all.

Re: Drum Lessons for Beginners?

As a relative beginner I am finding that my favourite method of practise is to be shown an exercise or exercises on video then go away to my kit and keep at it till I nail it. I'm so much more motivated this way. I especially love independance exercises with notation.

As a self taught basher over many years I never really got past the advanced beginner stage & quit over 20yrs ago. But the bug never left me and 12 months ago decided to get stuck in and learn to play well so bought myself a kit. I have been seriously struggling with basic notation & rudiments getting really demorallised with the tedious sessions & lack of progress which was just killing my motivation, but I continue to slowly plug away at it.

I am more motivated and excited about my drums when practising independance exercises or particular songs or parts of songs, I really look forward to getting behind my kit and it seems more specific once I have nailed it to have that particular exercise as part of my new routine.

If you where to put something together along thoise lines I'd be interested.
