Wedding Gigs

Hi Guys,

Unexpectedly, I get referred to a band leader that does lots of wedding gigs, receptions,
etc. Not my usual 'alternative' R&R gig.

Never played any of his material, all covers of course, and styles I haven't played.
It will pay good money, if I get the job, and I could use that, but - where do I start learning that kind of material?

Anyone have experience w. this kind of gig, and sort of what to expect?

Thanks.

Re: Wedding Gigs

The best thing would be to see if he has any recorded gigs so you can hear the tapes. Don't sweat it though, you won't be expected to do anything flashy. You'll have to keep time mostly so lock in closely with the bass player. Get the leader to count in the songs so you don't have to memorize the tempos.

Make sure you know how to do a variety of beats -- the simpler the better. For example, you'll probably have to do a polka (like a toned down blast beat), a swing in 4/4 and 3/4 (waltz), a bossa nova, maybe a railroad beat and a twist. It wouldn't hurt to bring some brushes for the ballads and mallets for cymbal rolls. You can research the novelty songs on Youtube, like the chicken dance, the macarana and whatever goofy songs are popular these days. If you're lucky they'll play wipe out and you can floor them with your speed!

Good luck!

Re: Wedding Gigs

Thanks, that pretty much covered it.
