HELP!Be the best teacher/enable the best students

Hi there, I'm new to this site. My name is Connor and I'm from Canada. I've been playing for 16 years and am on my 9th year teaching professionally. I teach an average of 40-50 half hour slots per week and I'm looking to be a better teacher. I'm hoping some other drummers/ teachers might be able to provide some feedback on what I cover and give suggestions for things to that I may add.

Here's what I do:
Technique-finger/wrist development, how to grip(fulcrum placement), efficiency, finger isolation...
Basic rhythmic theory-note values, repeat signs...
Proper alternating
Reading-snare, beats
Playing by ear
Playing with music
Speed drills-1-100,
Rudiments-
limb isolation and independence
Metronome work-TONS
...the list goes on a bit

Books I use:
Progressive Drum Method
Alfred's Drum Method book 1
Syncopation
New Breed -only a few pages
...there are a few more I can't think of.

I do some style development in jazz, but not too much.

I wish my students were more creative. I've tried showing them that the drum kit can be like a white canvas if they treat it like one. You know...EXPLORE!!! For some reason most of what they do is very plain sounding. Obvious fills, fairly plain beats...

How can I get them to be more creative?

I have lot's of questions. I guess I'll wait to see if anyone is interested in discussing this.

Links are fully welcomed!!!!

Re: HELP!Be the best teacher/enable the best students

Hi Connor,

Welcome to the forum.

I hope i can be of help having been a teacher now for 10 years.

As you know, every student is different and has different needs - the job of a teacher is to really understand each students bad points and know right away the correct exercises to work through to put him or her on the right path.

Knowledge of pretty much all styles, although i hate thrash metal, is needed so if a student gets a phone call to do a Latin, Jazz, Funk, etc gig they can go and do it.

I have my second book out, 808 exercises (progressional) which a lot of teachers are using, this covers many things - this is a link which has much more information.

Paperback Book - Drum Kit Lessons - Online Drum Tutorials - Dan's Drum Lessons

If you have any further question, please get in touch on here or via my email dan@dansdrumlessons.com

Keep up the good work also

Dan

Hi, Connor--

One of the things that helps my drum students to be more creative is to have them play accurate transcriptions of drummers who ARE creative. It widens their perspective and provides them with new ideas.

I have a service that provides accurate drum transcriptions of any song. Several of my customers are drum teachers who use the transcriptions in their teaching.
