Major drum influences

Ok, so I know there's a section for this in the user profile, but I wanted to start a thread about it too.. who are your biggest drum influences? Mine would have to be Metallica and Lars Ulrich (even though he was a cock in the Napster copyright thing.. well rightfully so)

I would have to say that my three big ones are going to be neil peart, lars,
and carter buffort from dave matthews band.

I bought this video about a year ago neil peart a work in progress and wow.
I learned a lot from what he shows and I could inturpet it into my playing and as a bonus it had a clip from carters video on there and I was totaly blown away by it.

as for lars. I dont really like the guy and it aint over the nappster thing I was over seas at the time and really didnt even know what that was.
but you have to respect him in some ways on his skills.
at one time he held the record as the 2nd fastest feet in drumming (the way I heard it anyways) but also his abilty to be able to throw the beat from the down beat to the up beat and then back again in just a few bars.
It took me a while to figure out what he was doing (like master of pupets)

Im sure I could go on about a lot of the other drummers that have infinced me but I would be here all night.

as for travis dude he is good but he's not that good. when lars was in his prime I dont think he would have been able to keep up but lars is getting a little old now and seems like he gave up on what he used to enjoy.

But dont take that the wrong way he is still a great drummer with some amzing chops but I just dont hear the greatness that could be there in his music. (and I am a big fan of blink)

so who's next lets see who infunces you and why.

Great post, fullmetal
Most of my influences come from drum videos that I either bought or downloaded.. Steve Smith in his instructional dvd was a big influence. I also remember my first exposure to a drum clip.. watching tony royster jr do a beserk drum solo at 12 years old.. i think that is what inspired me to work harder on the drums, especially because I was also so young and Tony was already light years ahead of me. I wonder how he's been doing now... anyone know?

Sorry to say but Travis is exremely overrated. He's just considered one of the best because he's well publicized and the teeny boppers of the music world don't know any better.. just my 2cents

Thank you larry I think that was I was trying to say.
Ive seen videos of him playing live that my freind had and I have to say he is just an avrage drummer. But he is very dedcated as far as I can tell to what he does and he does have some good chops but other wise he is just like the rest of us.

Talking about recordings when I first started playing I bought this issue of MD that had a recored with it and it was one of the buddy rich solos from west side story and it was like 15 min long. That was a life changing solo to me and I wish I still had it.

Another good drummer that I saw one time but I dont know what his name is was the drummer that played live for yanni at the acorpilps (sorry I have no idea how to spell it) but he has a drrum soly in it and just watching the one handed roll while playing another beat with his right hand. I think I wore out that section of the video watching it.
