Sensitive drum mics

I'm not really familiar with drum micing and such. In fact, you can consider me a newbit, but i need some advice on drum micing. What are the best mics out there for drums these days? I need that can handle loud playing and delivers crisp output. Thanks.

I guess that im with you on that one because I really dont know.
Im trying to figure that out myself.
I read some of the reveiws on musicans freind about some of them and the one I think that I am going to stay away from is nady.
I read some very nasty things about them but their mike are at such a good price.

A few people I talked to said that I should go with shure and that they are the best but their mikes are kinda high but I bet they sound good.

Re: Sensitive drum mics

For snare try a Shure sm57. It is a world standard, works well on toms also. I personally use a 57 on snare Sennheiser 602 on toms(very crisp and punchy) Audio technica pro-25 mics on large toms. The AT is actually a kick mic but is awesome on floor toms. Lastly for kick drums I prefer an AKG D-112. They're a lot of good mics out there. If you are on a very tight budget(who isn't) go with CAD. you can get a good sound at a reasonable price. I personally would buy higher quality used mics, you get better quality at the same or lower price as with budget with mics.

Re: Sensitive drum mics

The mic's that are used when I play live are Shure SM57 on snare, Beta 52 inside the kick drum, and a pair of Rode NT5's for over heads. Since it only takes up four channels on the mixer, the sound engineers like it and the sound is quite full and balanced. Even the nuances from the hats and the ride cymbal work comes through quite clearly. Although if your bandmates amps are close to the kit, you might put up some plexiglass shields to help tame the bleed over from the amps. Well, unless you're not concerned about that.

Re: Sensitive drum mics

I know someone who uses sure's overhead and a set of Peavy PVM series drum mic's. They have different frequency response ratings for each application (low for kick, mid for tom's and higer for snare) and handle high db's so they won't blow out or clip. They mount easy too.... They're on my wish list for my set now... unfortunately they're about $400 for a 5pc setup & I've got 15 drums to mic so I'll be wishing for a while. Check you're local music stores to see if they stock them, one of ours let him try the set before he bought it.
