Trying a new way to play

About a year ago I bought a dvd of neal peart and it had a bonus of the drummer from dave matthews (sorry all of a sudden I cant rember his name)

But anyways I was watching haw he played drums and I thought it was really smart and cool.
He is playing with his left hand but his kit is set up for a right handed peson, so I thought why couldnt a right handed person do this.
So I set up my kit the way a lefty would play it and have my HH on the right side of the kit so that there is no cross over.
I will tell you now that it does make playing a lot easier but it takes a while to get used to it.
The only thing I cant seem to do yet is using the HH pedal with my right foot like I would with my left foot so I guess it's good that I have to HH so I set up my permently closed one on the right side and the regular stand is on my left in between my last tom and my floor tom.
It takes time to get used to it but I dont think I would ever chenge the way I have set up.
It also lets me come up with some great HH/ride combos because the HH is right onder the ride.

Im going to put up a pic of it soon so that everyone gets a better pick of what Im talking about.
but If your board one day try it out and see what you think.

wow thats actually a great idea! i think it'd be a totally different perspective though
my left side heavily lags behind my right side so maybe doing this will help to bring them to par... hmmmm

yea it could. that was my first thought was to play left handed instead of right to try and build up my left but I kept going back to playing with my righ tbut was finding that it was easier to play that way and move around the kit.

I think it was gene karupa that would try and do everything with his left hand including shacking with his left to try and make it stronger just for playing.

Thumbs up

I tried doing that and it worked wonders for my independence. After moving everything over, I felt like a newbie again as my right foot kept doing weird things with the hihat pedal and my left foot wouldn't respond properly on the bass. It's really a good change especially in practice and I would recommend it to everyone. I'm not sure if i would actually do that for a gig tho.

haha, is that a name of a book or something? why do you have every word in caps...whoah

but anyway, i think they were talking about something totally different.. open handed vs setting up kit backwards to develop the left side more.. but you're right.. u dont need to set up kit backwards to play open handed

The only thing I ment by set up the kit for left handed is to just get a new perspective on playing.
I have left my kit set up this way because I have found it easier to move around the kit (Im kinda bad about doing things backwards sometimes) but I love it and for right now it works for me.
Like I said it is just somthing new for some drummers that have never tried it before.

yeah open handed playing... i've been doing this for some time now and it works wonders... only think I'm struggling with doing this is is playing ghost notes... something always seems to come up and i lost coordination.

I think the only thing that I cant seem to do is work the hh with my right foot the way I do with my left.
If I try playing even the simpilist beat I screw it all up tryying to play lefty, thats why I keep a regular HH stand set up normal on the other side.

but then wouldn't not having that hihat there force you to play the other one and therefore force you to adapt and start getting comfortable? I suggest you try that.. being uncomfortable only means you are adapting and getting stronger
