Need some help Identifying this thing...

Hey guys, I am actually not a drummer, but a guitarist/pianist/singer who wandered in here. I am trying to find out what this thing is called. It is a "drum set" that you sit on, and then pound out the beat with your hands while sitting on it. It looks kinda like an amp from a distance and there aren't any "toms" or "cymbals" but it still makes these noises. I know it isn't a drum station, seeing as you sit on it, and it isn't that small. Anyway, you can go to this place, and watch one of the videos and the guy sitting in the front (usually) with a mic is sitting on this device. Sorry for the bad description I don't know of any way else to describe it.

Thanks! And I hope to learn a lot more from this community!

Anything & Always,
David Aaron

David Aaron-

What you see (and hear) in the video is a Peruvian instrument called a cajon (pronounced kah-HONE). It's essentially a wooden box, but oh, so much more! The side facing the audience is thinner than the other walls. Most likely, the rear (or bottom) wall has a port hole, allowing air to escape and creating nice low tones. Many sounds can be produced by playing different places on the cajon, and with different stroke techniques. In addition to using bare hands, I love playing the cajon with brushes, something I first saw from Norah Jones' drummer do. Search online- you'll find all sorts of cajon resources. I hope this helps!
