All these posts are good ideas; if you are going to do the left hand exercises while watching a movie, you might also try using a click, (gradually) increasing the speed as you become more proficient. You not only want to improve the stroke, but also increase the speed and endurance. It takes time, but the more you use it, the easier it becomes.

Get a book of "independence" exercises such as Progressive Independence by Ron Spagnardi and work through it.
