Red face Cymbal choking

Is there a proper technique for cymbal choking? Up to now, I just kind of do it subconsciously.. i simply hit the cymbal with one hand and then use my other hand to grab it. Just wondering if there is any better way to do it. Anyone?

I don't really think there is a proper technique.. the way I do it usually, I keep my thumb on top and my forefinger on the bottom.. make sure you don't overdo it as you may drop your stick.. leave enough room to hold the stick

WEll like everyone said, there's no set rule.. anything goes as long as you don't drop the stick or it doesn't slow you down... so feel free to kick the cymbal stand down, use your mouth, or anything else you can come up with.. =P

cymbal choking can get really corny and stupid.. don't overuse it.. in terms of technique.. its gonna depend on what youre choking.. if its a heavy ride or thick crash obviously its gonna take more effort than a 6 inch splash.. just use your judgement and try to be gentle at the same time.
