Hitting an improvement wall..

Sometimes I feel like I just hit a wall in terms of improvement and skill level.. Anyone ever go thru this? It's just so discouraging because you have doubts about yourself and your ability to play drums.. sure u can get thru it with hard work but it's just so hard to find new things to learn and really keep motivated.. the dreaded comfort zone..

so what do you guys do to braek out of something like this... the drummers block so to speak

What I ended up doing is I tryed a new way of playing and started working more on my left foot to make it stronger.

I also got some videos to see what some of the main stream guys that have a very unique playing style to see if I could put some of there stuff into my music. and that can help you form new ideas and even whole new rythums that you never thought about playing.

it's also good to get a drum teacher if you can afford it and are willing to put in the time for it... a good teacher will really motivate you and give you new ideas that you probaly didnt think of before... but if you cant do that.. books and dvds and videos of other drummers are the next best thing

Think of it like running or trying to lose weight.. You may not see results in a day or two.. but if you look at the whole picture you can see yourself improving and getting better at the drums.. so whenver you practice and it sucks and you don't see yourself going anywhere, keep at it, step back and look at the whole picture.. step by step you're getting somewhere

Wow! Try playin everything you can play with your hands, with your feet instead. Practice leading off fills with your weaker hand. Buy a drumometer! They make practice so fun it's addicting! When I started learning guitar, it caused me to totally think different when I'm playin drums. Ya know when you hit a wall , tappin on it wont do much good. you gotta break! through the wall!

Rearange your kit a little. Worked for me.

I agree with the kit arranging because sometimes your snare could be at a different angle or whatever your problem is, maybe your throne is too low, just try to make adjustments. . . and if you don't see any improvment, watch the limb(s), rudiments etc... you are having trouble with and see if you notice anything wrong. And if all else fails search it on YouTube!

What I say is just keep listening to songs, and when you here a cool fill, copy it and mix it with what you do, and you will get better.

Well it is all a matter of what he is having trouble with. He could be playing a song nearly perfect, but have a totally different issue like trying to master the Double Stroke Roll etc...
