Hand/Wrist Injuries

I've heard of people injuring their wrist or hands because of playing drums. Things like Carpal Tunnel can result with improper technique or stress. It's a syndrom that you can get from computer use as well.

Anyway, have you guys experiences any of this? I get a lot of blisters on my hands when playing and the vibrations from the sticks aren't so pleasant either.

check out Zildjian Anti-vibe drum sticks
http://www.zildjian.com/EN-US/produc...catalogID=1031

I had a cyst on my hand (see red circle) it hurt really bad to play until I got the anti-vibe sticks.

ouch! Sorry about that DrummerMom.

So what are these Anti-Vibe sticks and how do they work? What are the drawbacks of using them? (Otherwise, wouldn't they be standard?)

Im pretty sure they have rubber in the center or something. I really hate Zildjian sticks. They should've stuck with making cymbals. But I understand you need them because they dont hurt your hands.

if you are getting carple tunnle you are doing somthing very wrong.

musicans that normaly get it is piano players and flute players, and it is because of the postion of the wrist while playing, I have never know a drummer or even heard of a drummer getting it.

I can tell you one of the worst things you are looking at is aurthritis and blisters, and thats probably the worst of it, Im sure there are other things but I am real sure that carpul tunel is not one of them.

I think the worst thing I ever had was a big wart on my right middle finger right were the secend knuckle bends, that hurt a lot when playing.

I have a lot of calises from drumming and golfing, but I do bust up my fingers a lot from hitting cymbals since my crash and hi hat are close together I always hit my hi hat when im using two hands on the crash. The most painful injuries I get is when I hit the floor tom rim with my finger. Another kinda funny injury is when I hit myself with my stick, most of the time I hit my knee, but one time when I first started playing drums and had no control I hit myself in my eye. I definitly have some blood on my drum heads, and I do work on control, but when I get into a song I forget what control is, unless its with my school band and its a jazz song or something, then I always have dynamics and control going threw my head.

I've hit myself in the eye before, feel really stupid for a few seconds while the pain kicks in but then you've just got to keep focused and it seems to disappear.

Ouch... That's really painful. Maybe next time you should play drums with some safety goggles..

The worst that's happened to me was when I was taking off my bass drum pedal and hand got kind of wedged in between the bottom of the drum and the pedal clip. Gosh, it was painful...

I've got a cyst grown from the top of my right wrist. It doesn't cause me any pain though. I got married two years ago and sometimes my ring gives me blisters. I've bashed myself in eye a number of times. Annoyingly it usually happens while I'm performing cause I'm trying to accentuate my moves. I used to have an eyebrow ring and I hit it so hard the steel ball fell out of it. Never did find that thing.

Yeah, the wedding ring's the killer. These days I take mine off when I play and put it over the rod of the hi-hat stand. You can just hear it rattling on a couple of recordings I've done. Sounds cool.
