What motivates you?

What motivates you to practice drums and to get better? Is it just for the sake of getting better? To show off to your friends and band members what you can do? To be the best that you can be for personal fulfillments or for others? Is it to get a new gig for more money or more enjoyment? Or is it pressure to play a song right and not make a fool of yourself? The possibilities are endless. So what motivates you??

Two things.

Firstly, drumming was the first thing I was ever good at. I was picked on in school a lot and wasn't very popular, but after I played my first backyard party, people who previously refered to me as "Ya fat c***" were now calling me by my first name. It felt good telling them where to go after that.

Secondly, being in the groove is just the best feeling. Whether you're on stage with your band or practising by yourself, it's such an awsome feeling when you've got a rythm nailed and you can realy feel the thing driving you as well you driving it.

Drums are the only instrument I've ever wanted to play. My mother was a percussionist and used would watch her play. So she has always been my main motivator! Also, I enjoy playing drums and learning from other drummers.

For me, getting better at the drums is a lucky side effect of playing, I wouldn't say I ever practice. Meaning I do play when I can but it's purely for the sake of playing, I'll throw in challenging little moves or rudiments here and there and eventually things fall into place and stamina builds and so on. What drives me to play is the fact that I can't seem to stop, as Skinslapper said: "it's just the best feeling".

You have your answer in your own post !

Also because I like to play and have fun so I dont want to play what I can do easily or playing the same thing over and over and over....

I love to play drums. The thing that really motivates me is playing on stage in front of 200+ people and seeing your guitarist and singer go crazy and the rush you get after you pull off a great fill without hitting the rims or missing a beat. Honestly I don't practice by myself that ofter since my band is always practicing and I don't really like my set that much, but I can't go more than 2 days without playing.

Well, of course - first of all the desire to play the drums! Nothing makes me feel better than (like skinslapper said) sitting behind the set and just controlling that new beat or lick...

Second of all, I really feel, that I can keep on developing endlessly! There's always another fill or little technique that can be learned... This might scare somebody, but I just love the thought of always being able to continue improving my playing.

I agree that's great motivation, but what makes you want to become THAT good? They're just drum freaks which is awesome but what would you do when you get to that level? More gigs, more fame, more money?

I don't think you can ever be good enough playing the drums which is a great motivator. There is always more to learn, more creativity, more drum techniques, and more drum playing speed.
