fluid playing

I was listning to dave matthews band yesterday and I got to thinking about a clip I saw from carter bueforts under the table and drumming.
and I was thinking about how fluid he moves around the set like he isnt stiff at all like moving in water.

could this be one of the greatest keys to drumming and becoming a better player?
almost everydrummer I have ever seen play always has like a stiffness to them.

comments anybody.

I think it just means practicing, getting comfortable, and being loose when playing around the drum set.

Being stiff when playing drums can come from a variety of reasons, some of which are:
1. An insufficient warmup
2. Nervousness or some other sort of mental block
3. Insufficient chops or not being comfortable with what you're playing
4. Not playing loose and relaxed

Taking care of these 4 factors can help you to be much more "fluid" and relaxed around the drum kit.

Think about some of the very easy movements you make in everyday life. Clapping your hands, picking something up, walking.

You were stiff and unsure of these at some point too. I think you can train your body to be fluid with anything, it just takes practice.

I dont think that there has anything to be with being unsure of my self or my playing.

what Im talking about being stiff dosnt mean having a hard time getting around the kit.

have you ever watched him play, I cant ever rember seeing anouther drummer play like he does.
I wish I could explain it but you would just have to watch and see what I mean about how he is fluid moving around the kit.
like he isnt even working hard.

Oh ok, I think I get what you're saying now. Rather than just being comfortable, you're talking about having a feel for the drums and I don't think that's really something you can teach. You can try and practice and get it but I think it's just something that some people have and others don't.
