ringing in the ears

one of my drum buddies is having a problems where he hears ringing in the ears. i think he has tinnitis because he hasn't been wearing ear protection. I think that this should really convince him to start wearing some headphones or plugs but is there anything he can do to ease it down? Has anyone been to an ear doctor or soemthing? If so, what did they do for you? thanks in advance

Tinnitus

I saw an ENT for my tinnitus. It had gotten to the point that i wasn't sleeping well because of it. He told me to take 400-800 mg of niacin twice per day, and also gingko biloba (took lots of this because it's supposed to be good for you memory ). Was also told to stay away from caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and salt. (CATS) Giving up my coffee was really hard, but i tried. Not much of a drinker or smoker anymore, so that wasn't too bad. Did this for a couple of months...the ringing got better, but did not go away. Last time i saw him, I pinned him down about what this regimen was really supposed to do for me. Told me, basically, the prescription drugs for tinnitus are iffy at best and usually produce more side effects than they are worth. The niacin and the gingko are just supposed to make you feel better in general, and then maybe you won't dwell on your tinnitus so much. I do feel better, but i cranked up with my coffee again, and i feel even better!! My ears still ring, but so far i can live with it most of the time. So basically his advice is take good care of yourself in general, and learn to cope. So I wear earplugs any time I think life might be too loud. Prob'ly not much help for anyone else, but it seems to work for me. At least I am sleeping better now. best of luck to eveyone trying to deal with the constant hum or buzz or ring.

Ive had ringing in my ears for a very long time now and I have lost a lot of sleep over it but for a few years I would leave the tv on when I went to bed and that seemed to help me sleep untill it go better from not playing for a while. I guess what Im saying is that if you can then try and have somthing distracting for your ears untill the ringing gets better.

I can't imagine not being able to sleep because of a ringing in the ears.. I think I'd go mad... A lesson to all - always wear earplugs when you're banging on your drums!
