Polyrhythms

Hey everyone~ I'm new here on the forums. It'd be nice to get to know y'all~.

Anyway, I'm starting to learn some polyrhytms with my drum teacher and I think its super cool stuff! For those of you that don't know, a polyrhythm is basically multiple rhythms played at the same time. It can be two different phrases in different time signatures like 5/8 with your bass drum, 3/4 on the hi hats, and 4/4 on the snare - just as an example.

It's really hard and it really challenges your brain to split apart and play two different things... I'm afraid I'm going to be schizophrenic after this! What are some groovy polyrhythms that y'all play? I'd love to try some. Thanks!

I love playing a passage from Tool's song "Eulogy" which has a standard bass and and snare part but the hats are played on the third. The song comes off the Anima record.

The August 2006 issue of Modern Drummer has an article on Polyrhythms applying them to the drumset. On pages 108 and 109 (By Chris Pennie of Dillinger Escape Plan).

Here are some more Polyrhythms

I mimic danny carey's polyrythms, he has one I imitate and/or copy in 5/8 time, it's pretty cool. I make my own up a lot...

Hey dnastrands,
Could you maybe post a couple of Danny's or your polyrhythms on here? Some examples to practice would really be awesome~. Thanks!

I'm not sure I know to post audio or visual clips. I know this probably causes me to fall into the category of deficient, so commence ridiculing whenever you wish...
However, I can give you some song titles in which polyrythms are incorperated into.
Eulogy/hi hat
Aenima/hi hat (you'll hear it)
Lateralus/hi hat (he likes using the hi hats for them)
Lots of odd time as well, odd time signatures are intense and very satisfying/satiating (etc) to play...

Chris Penney actually imitates a polyrythm Danny Carey does on eulogy on their second cd, 'Miss Machine'.
