Down, though, and up hi hat technique

Well that's not really what it's called but what I'm talking about is when you hit the hi hat on the way down, go through it so that your stick is now below the hi hats and then go up and through again in a constant fluid motion. What are the advantages of doing this, besides for showmanship? Is there an easier way to do it? I've tried it and it's hard to go through the hi hats (or give the impression that you're going through.)

Is this technique somewhat like swiping up to hit crash cymbals? Sorta where you crash your hi-hats by bringing the stick up from under it? If you have a video of it, please share...

No, it doesn't involve crashing any cymbals. I'm talking about when you're only on the hi hat and you alternate between hitting the top and bottom by giving the illusion that you're hitting through the hi hats. Tony Royster Jr does it in one of his solos when he was younger.

Ah, Alright. I didnt mean it like that, I just wondered if the motion was the same. I'll look at some his solos and see......
EDIT: I see what you mean... In this video, about a minute in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPncu...20Royster%20Jr.
I could imagine doing that in a very heavy song playing open handed with some double bass work... It would probably sound good in that situation.

That looks super cool~ But I think that might cause some wrist and hand injuries if you're not gentle and careful going up and down.

I think it's primary function is definitely showmanship, it can be pretty enthusing!

Yea, I tried to do that once, and I just couldn't get it to flow like tony did, one of my friends brought over a video that had some drummers and bassist on it and steve smith did this crazy solo with his hi hat, I think some of that was involved, anyways if anyone stumbles across that clip on the internet they should definitly post it, it is really neat.

He did a drum solo with just his hi hat? That's really impressive stuff and I would love to see that as well.

Yeah, that's one of the problems I have too. When Tony Royster does the up and down hi hat thing it looks so smooth, almost like he's going through the hats. But like you said, it's hard to do and it looks and sounds really choppy when I try it.
