Overusing Double Bass I find this is being done ALOT these days. Most metal drummers are all blast beats and 16th note bass drum rolls. While sure it sounds cool the first five seconds, I find the song gets old real quick when Its just an entire blast beat.
Then again, there are people who use double bass sparingly (and effectively). For example Tim Alexander with Primus on Sailing the seas of Cheese. Also, Steve Smith uses double bass very effectively and tastefully.
So, what do you guys think? And do you know any other drummers who use double bass more "evenly" with the rest of their kit? |

| | | I totally agree with you in this respect. So many drummers out there today put up videos of "drum solos" where they do a double bass roll the entire time. Although it does display good "chops", it means absolutely nothing musically and I'm tired of hearing it. |

That song would not have been anywhere near as effective without that double bass powering through it like a freight train. |

| | | I agree with Skin, in some songs double bass is really overused, but other times it really fills in the song. On the other hand I am getting tired of the blast notes . |

| | | I kinda use double a little to much but Im not doing rolls all the way thru songs I try and use a very tech aproch to it and use it where I think it sounds best in a song.
I also wanted to say that for some metal songs not all of them the guitar players or whoever write out the song is exspecting a drummer that is going to play that thru the whole song.
I know that there is some metal songs out there that you could do with out that. |

| | | I think it really depends on the type of music you are playing. For metal, obviously you are going to hear more blast beats with the double bass, but at the same time I think it can be done more tastefully with maybe some dynamics and some change of pace once in a while.
For other types of music, I like when double bass rolls are used in fills and grooves at the right times. I agree that if they're overused it can get old really fast. |

| | | Yeah, I agree that the blast beat thing is being done to death at the moment, I just choose not to buy those albums. I recently became exposed to Bleeding Through's latest record. That drummer knows how to use double bass. Very fast, very flavoursome. |
