How many calories does drumming burn? I was going for an hour drumming away and by the end I was pretty damned tired! Does anyone know how many calories a hardcore drumming session might burn? The exact number would obviously be hard to tell.. but I think it could be compared to a 30 minute run. Im tired! |

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? I have CHF and have had it since I was 24,I'm 29 now. My Cardiologist says that playing the drums is the BEST cardio workout you can do! It increases blood circulation and speeds up breathing and actually helps to lower your blood pressure. I dont get to get out and exercise but I do practice 3 to 4 times a week and this has helped me dramaticly in becoming healthy again.. |

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? Great White Tatanka, is right about getting great vascular and muscle tones. Drumming works out every part of the body, twice better than bicycling or running, as long as you keep away from the alcohol. I've had the same chat with my doctors, especially since my lumbar surgery after a work injury seven years ago.
And you do burn a lot more calories drumming for an hour than running. As a matter of fact, running is to be done with running shoes, so as to prevent physical impacts on the legs and back.
This is no bull, I seriously spoke to my surgeon, pain management doctor , and family doctor before getting back on the drum throne. They advised that I should keep up the drumming. Even though I can't walk, stand or lay down for too long. Sometimes I even sleep in a recliner to keep the pressure off my lumbar and cervical.
For those of you really want to burn calories, try going to a sweat lodge.

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? TAINOJIM,
I agree that playing drums is good exercise -- that was one solid reason I used for justifying the purchase of my new set in retirement.
But I can't agree that drumming is better than bicycling for exercise. I take an indoor bicycling class on a Computrainer three days a week with the workouts designed by a triathlon trainer. When I started in September it literally took me three days to recover from an hour and a half workout. Now, after 5 months of classes, it is still taking me two days to recover from a workout. (Of course, the workouts have grown more difficult since September.)
But I figure I burn about 500 calories in an hour and a half on the bike.
Drumming is good exercise, but it's a far cry from the cycling I'm doing. |

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? As a matter of fact I've suggested biking to my son when he had a problem with his equilibrium with playing double pedals.
But also remember that if your muscles are too big, it can have an adverse effect with playing double bass pedals also.
An excess of anything is not good. Drumming is a great vascular work out.
Different work outs for different parts of the body, there is when the individual has to find a balance. |

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? Well,, Depending on how you drum a 30 min session can equal maybe an hour of moderate running. |

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? Has anyone heard the song Haushinka by Green Day(It's on the album Nimrod)? That in it's self is a workout! I try to play it, and it's not really that hard, but I can't actually make it through the whole f***in song! Look it up on youtube or something. Maybe I'm playing it wrong, or maybe it's just tiring. |

Re: How many calories does drumming burn? This all depends on the genre of music, when I play in my schools jazz band for an hour and a half it barely makes me tired. But when I go home and play hard rock and metal for an hour and a half that makes me tired! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
