Exclamation matched or traditional

some people swear by the traditional grip and others the matched grip. I personally think that there are uses for both. I tend to switch it up, traditional more for rudimentary stuff, matched for more groovy stuff.. plus it looks cool when switching.

I started out with traditional grip - my first drum set teacher was a serious Buddy Rich and Joe Morello devotee - but in college I got serious about matched grip. I'm finding that, even though I haven't made a conscious effort to do so, I've slowly been phasing traditional grip out of my repertoire. Even for straight ahead jazz - sometimes, I'll start out holding trad' in the left hand, just out of habit, but within a few measures I'm back to matched. I'm even working on using matched for brushwork.

Bottom line, tho, is do whatever works for you. I haven't yet heard what I consider to be a good argument as to why one would have to use traditional grip, but I also haven't heard any convincing arguments as to why one shouldn't. Knock yourself out.

I mostly play matched grip, though I'm working on my trad grip - Trad grip is just a tiny bit hard to move between drums (ie snare and toms), so I tend to use it when Im just on one drum.

Never had a lesson but the one drum teacher I saw teaching one of my friends switched between both.

I used to do only matched grip...But now I do a whole lot more traditional grip. Trad. grip just comes alot more naturally to me for some reason.
