Re: Bad Drumming habits to avoid

^^I bet Pig flu all started cause someone kissed a pig

I'd say bad grip - especially with your weak hand. A while ago my right hand used to be shocking - I'd get sore fingers if I was playing for a while and I tried to fix it but couldn't. I had to concentrate on it pretty much every time I played so now it's not as bad, although my right hand still has a few issues when it comes to precision and high speeds.

Don't knock others drumming, even if you think you can do better.

Red face Re: Bad Drumming habits to avoid

i play open handed and one of my sins is turning over my left hand on the hihat, its like shaking your hand with your wrist, i dont think its good for your wrists. my other is slouching and my last is not practicing as long as i should be.

Make sure you warm up, drumming with cramp and pulled muscles is not fun.

Number one for me slouching, it sometimes takes me 3/4 of the first set to realize my posture sucks by then my back hurts me the rest of the night.

Second I can’t say enough about warming–up before a show.

Re: Bad Drumming habits to avoid

First i got say i agree with the bad habits so far and posture. Here is a question i want to know. Why do some of my favorite drummers look like they have terrible posture? IS it a habit that did not acknowledge or they just was on drugs and did not feel the pain? Here are a few examples vids but there are tons more on some great drummers with terrible posture in my opinion.

This is one of my favorite drummers and tons of videos with worse posture than this video. When he gets a little ways in the solo he slouches and i have seen him in other videos do this a whole lot.

I have also seen Keith moon with some terrible posture. Once again though he did use horse tranquilizers I like when the singer states at around 38 seconds can anyone play the drums? They seemed more concerned about the show than the drummer. I would drugs that knock you out during a show is a bad habit.

Re: Bad Drumming habits to avoid

I think it was mentioned already, but I'll reinforce the need to avoid the bad habit of playing an absurd fill just "because you can" even if it doesn't fit the music. I think it's a phase drummers go through when they learn how to superimpose 5 over 4 or some other such nonsense. It's all well and good to show off, but if you pull that stuff in your high school or college jazz band you'll lose everyone and the director will get pissed at you, trust me...

Re: Bad Drumming habits to avoid

There is a huge misconception between slouching and hunched.

Hunched position mode been used since the days of Buddy Rich and so on.

Slouched is when you at the dinner table and your mommy hits you over the head and says, "Straighten up you back, you look like your father."

This only creates a sense of a complex in your life. To always be concerned about what you look like to others, instead of just have fun in life and being creative.

Look at Einstein for example, he invented the Afro, or he just didn't have the money to buy a comb.

Lets not get out of focus about posture and enjoy drumming no matter what you look like. Besides, no one can see you sitting behind the skins. We all get old and eventually end up slouching anyway. So why fight it.

You can be more concerned about your posture and create a complex or you can just enjoy drumming the way it is.
