Bad Drumming habits to avoid

I think the concern about posture is not about how you look but how it will affect your playing and your physical condition and fitness in the future. Mike Mangini once said something about your fitness and posture and how if you're not paying attention to them you will hurt yourself and your playing.

That is absolutely true, for example you will down the line end up with back trouble if you continue to to play hunched over it is just a matter of time. The same goes for most of what are known as bad habits. This is not to say that different styles or variations of those styles are bad habits though.

I'd say my biggest bad habit is playing too much and practicing too little. When confronted with the choice between paradiddles or rocking out to something, I inevitably abandon my practice routine.

Ditto. Who wants to do rudiments when you can JAM. A bad habit I'd like to avoid is all the weird faces I make while playing. I can't stand to watch myself drum. I saw a video of Neil Peart rocking out with a stone cold poker face on. It was cool. I look like I'm gasping and weezing for breath.

Louie J., those are called expressions. I do that all the time.

I don't care if the chicks run away, I'm married anyway.

Guilty of that myself

. When I was young and just learning, I hated the rudiments. Now that I'm older (and wiser?) I wish I'd have mastered them all, especially when I see drummers like Todd Sucherman incorporate them into monster jams. I keep stressing this to my son, whose just learning right now himself. I wonder if he'll listen

There are only 40 rudiments.

20 of which are the essential.

You can't eat an elephant in one sitting, but you can piece by piece.

So best bet would be to take them one at a time and master each as you go along.

Benn play over 50 years and I don't even use half of them.

While practicing ruds, play and have some fun in between by incorporating them.
