I had a few moments this evening, so I tried taking a quick video demonstrating the playing of a brake drum. It sounds like you're hitting a hunk of metal, basically. Still, it's a nice sound, and really effective in the right context(s).

I think one of the best uses for these that I ever heard n a song was for the music in the movie aliens (alien 2 is you dont know which one it is) but it is very effective in that movie.

of course when you type in brake drum all you are going to come up with is car drum brakes because that is what it is.
we played ours in shool using hard mallets like you use on a marimba.
