Is trad grip a requirement for jazz players?

and if so, does anyone know any sites where I could get some instruction on how to use it?
Thanks,
Gooner

Traditional grip is not a requirement for playing jazz.

- Bill Stewart, one of the most acclaimed jazz drummers on the scene today, uses matched grip.

- Jack DeJohnette, one of the most acclaimed jazz drummers ever, has switched from traditional grip to matched grip, with absolutely no adverse effects on his ability to play jazz.

By all means, feel free to investigate traditional grip, but please don't view its use as a prerequisite for playing jazz.

I alternatively use both because each has it pros and cons (my brushes work and my ghost notes are better using trad). I learn how to use trad - french - german grip watching Dom Famularo cyber lessons on Vic Firth... http://www.vicfirth.com/education/dr...mfamularo.html

I use both depending on the situation. I was taught traditional and forced to switch to matched grip in 8th grade by my band director. My drum instructor made me play my lessons both ways.

I've actually never seen DeJohnette play, but I have heard a bit on the radio (NPR). At least there's hope! I've tried working on trad grip yesterday, but it seems like I have to adjust my snare (tilt it) to avoid hitting every note as a rimshot...

I don't think anything's really a requirement for drummers. That's why I think drumming and music is so great. It's open ended and lets you interpret things for yourself like art. Of course there are only suggestions that may help your technique and style and that's what the traditional grip is - a suggestion.
