cleaning your drums

I was just wondering what some of you clean your drums with, I use pledge to get dust and dirt and grime off and I have also found that it works well on your cymbals to if you are just looking to get dust and some finger prints off of them put not for polishing them up.

I just use a soft rag. My kit has a Matte Finish and I don't want to ruin it by putting something on it. (I actually called DW/PDP and asked what to clean my kit with and the guy didn't.)

Re: cleaning your drums

Man, I wish I would have gone with a Matte finish. I have a super glossy Pearl Session Studio in Blue Burst... I use a soft rag and a little bit of pledge usually; the trouble is, I had just finished cleaning them up, and then I had to figure out a way to get them back into their cases without touching them and getting them all smudged up.

Hindsight's 20/20, eh?

Re: cleaning your drums

I never clean my cymbals anymore... never really had an excust to do so. If by some freak accident something spills on them my first choice in an emergency would be to wipe off what I could quickly and then grab some baby wipes (see more below). It would be better to contact the cymbal company for cleaning tips prior to an incident; since some cymbals are
coated. Certain cleaners can damage that coating and increase the risk
of your cymbals rusting.

For drums/hardware I usually use alcohol-free/scent-free baby wipes. They have a mild cleaner, don't cost much, work REAL good, and did I mention cheap. If you go this route
try to find the cloth-like wipes. Watch what you get too.... you don't want to be
rubbing aloe into your shells right.

Just keep a 100% cotton t-shirt nearby to buff out any excess moisture left by the wipes.

Go To The Wall Mart Auto Section And Buy One Of Many Top Of The Line Polishes. Remember...auto Wax Will Shine, but It Is More For Protection. Polish Is Just That: It Polishes To A Super Gloss. You Can Buy Products That Just Polish Or Ones That Clean And Polish. They Will Make Your Chrome Shine Also.

Re: cleaning your drums

I bought some wipes from Fry's electronics for my laptop and it works great for my drums.
