Church band players From the looks of it, I think a lot of you play drums at your church either as your main gig or on the side. For me, it's the only gig I have but I take it very seriously. It's not such an easy task but at the same time I like to have fun with it.
Who here is a church drummer? Is it your main gig? |

I rehearse down the road from a salvation army center. Does that count? |

I like it. It is fun the only thing is that I can not play loud.
so I use Promark Hot Rods. I have converted my floor tom to a bass drum
I use a 10in tom and a 12in tom as a floor tom and I use splash cymbals.
I look at it as it will teach me how to play softly and make it groove.
This is good. |

Re: Church band players YEAH, I USE THE HOT RODS ALSO. I REALLY LIKE THEM THOUGH. WHEN I'M PRACTICING THE SET, I CAN HEAR THE MUSIC IN MY HEADPHONES OVER THE DRUMS! I TRY NOT TO PLAY TOO LOUD, BUT AS I SAID, OUR WORSHIP TEAM TENDS TO ROCK OUT A BIT, SO THE CONGREGATION DOESN'T MIND TOO MUCH. |

Re: Church band players I also use the hotrods, but I miss the sound on the cymbals on jazz stuff, but they serve their purpose |

Who here is a church drummer? Is it your main gig? | Drumming in Church is my main gig. It gives me a way to give my talents back to God. Like many have said on here it is a challenge to play soft enough for the church setting. On ballads and softer numbers, I'll often use brushes or Hot Rods, I do use light jazz sticks on the more rocking tunes, and just try to control how hard I'm hitting. I don't always care for the lack of Ping on the Cymbals with the Hot Rods. Playing in church is a great way to get to play with others, and do something worthwhile for your church, and it can be a lot of fun. Our worship team has a blast!! |

Re: Church band players My church is the only gig for me as well but I also take it seriously. We play more upbeat contemporary music so it is a blast to play. There are no limits to GOD so I do not hold back. He gave me this gift so I am going to use it and learn it to the best of my ability. I just added a double bass pedal and a new snare drum to my set. I am learning the double bass for now but I cant wait to add it to the music. I think it will make a big difference. Keep up the good work for God. Be blessed. |

Be blessed. | I don't think there are many of us who play in Churh who don't take it seriously. Part of the Gift that God gave me as a drummer is the ability to play at appropriate volume levels for the size space your are in, and to match the volume level of the rest of the band. No offense to you, and none taken on my part either, but it sounds like you are criticizing those of us who are concious of our volume levels, and are trying to play at a level that isn't so loud that we drive people out of the worship space. I've actually been to worship services in another local church where the band was so loud that people actually left the sanctuary holding their ears. (I'm not accusing you of this, I've never heard you play, and you may be playing in a large enough worship space where you can let it all out). Some of us play for smaller church's where playing at lower volumes is appropriate, and necessary. Contemporary music (Christain or otherwise) shouldn't be painfully loud to the people trying to listen to it, and part of being a good musician is adjusting the volume (dynamics) of the music to set the appropriate mood for the song, with the appropriate blend with the other musicians, and singers. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
